Why Didn’t I Get an Interview?
If you’ve applied for any number of jobs, you’ve likely asked yourself the question, “Why didn’t I get an interview?” There are tons of reasons why that may be the case, but I wanted to shed some light on 5 reasons why you may not have been chosen for an interview, even if you feel you’re qualified.
First, with the crazy job market we’re in right now, there’s a lot of competition. There are a lot of open roles, but a lot of job seekers as well. Sometimes there are just too many applicants and your resume doesn’t even really get seen. Secondly, if you’re a little late to the application party, a candidate may have already been identified. Many organizations will leave a job posting up even after an offer has been accepted, just in case something happens before the selected candidate starts. Third, if you’re competing with an internal referral, it can be tough. Referrals have the know and trust factor, which adds a lot of value in the hiring process. Fourth, your resume doesn’t show your value. Many people leave their most impressive accomplishments off their resume. Why?! That’s exactly where they should be, communicating your value to a potential employer. Lastly, your resume doesn’t have enough relevant experience. Like my last point, this can often be a situation of not updating or customizing your resume to showcase your relevant experience and accomplishments, as they relate to the position you’re applying to.
